In the emerging new economy anything goes. The internet makes it easier than ever to bring any idea you have to market. And clearly what the restaurant market now craves is an upscale upgrade to the conventional containers used for customer’s unfinished meals.

“The Doggie Bag, is just so 20th century…” notes a patron of a popular Boothbay Harbor, Maine seafood restaurant. “My husband just had his leftovers scooped into an authentic Peruvian designer Alpaca Poncho. The spongy Huacaya fiber naturally repels water- and it’s ‘crimpy’ so the sauce does not leak all over the seat and stink up the Jaguar on the way home. And of course, it is totally luxurious!!!”

Owners of the restaurant could not be reached for comment.

It’s true we all have our shadow side. Sometimes it takes the shape of a small bowl of haplessly shredded bits of raw produce in brine strategically lit by sunset to help us see that we too can have a dark casting shadow with a hard shell… and claws…

a weekend to celebrate and remember, bud

mentor and friend, bud clarke
© Dave Weinberg 2010

Bud hired me as a recent grad of School of Visual Arts in the late 80s. A gracious, creative and endearing soul he gave me my running start in the business of design and creative services. Bud hosted an annual Men’s Weekend every summer in upstate NY for as long as I’ve known him. Last year, a month after the weekend, Bud died in cycling accident after colliding with, it was believed, a deer. This year’s Men’s Weekend will be the celebration of a dear mentor, husband, father, business owner, activist, warrior and artist.

Peace, my friend.

pfffffffft.... info graphic passing gas
© 2010 Dave Weinberg

Brunswick, Maine, Wednesday, July 21. Rereuters. New solar powered instant recycling bins recently installed at various locations on the Bowdoin College campus appears to feature an info graphic engaging in flatulent behavior.

The graphic, evocative of the original ‘Pitch In’ icon from the 1970’s features the universal symbol for human being, dropping trash into the universal symbol for trash can. The figure, slightly bent at the hips to suggest a slightly untucked shirt and/or lowered pant was immediately sighted by graduate students in the biology department who made a connection between trash and the release of methane.

A rogue faction of students from the political science department assert that the ‘cartoony’ outlined update of the graphic was actually designed by Matt Groening, creator of The Simpsons, and is actually an abstract profile of the character, Homer without a nose or eyeball.

It is unlikely that the icons will be changed. Bowdoin college officials were not even attempted to be reached for comment.

Know what else is a gas?

pay for nay monday

say yes or pay up (now with auto debit card)

Brattleboro VT, Monday, July 19. According to the Unassociated Press, the municipality of Brattleboro, Vermont has instituted Pay for Nay Monday, a new program aimed at combatting the negative attitudes and associations with the first day of the work week.

Observing that many people are negatively suggestible, contrarian and/or more apt to say “no” and be disagreeable, despite the lovely rolling and undulating tundra, Brattleboro municipalities will now require all city workers to find an agreeable method to address new ideas and conflicts. It will now cost $1.99 to say “no” to work related suggestions or ideas on Mondays.

The belief is that saying “yes” or “that might work and have you also considered…” will improve attitude and boost employee morale. Senior municipal officials declined to comment on the pay for nay monday program and were each charged $1.99.

Get the jump start on Monday by saying YES to

existentialist amusement park

a glimpse at your inner beeing
© 2010 Dave Weinberg

Brooklyn, New York. One of Luna Park’s, Coney Island’s more recent additions, (appropriately shown here thru chain link fencing) is known simply as ‘The Kierkegaard’ – which uses the metaphorical symbol of an oversized cartoon bee to represent exploration of the self (while being spun around in circles for about three and a half minutes).

According to wikipedia Søren Kierkegaard is regarded, posthumously as the father of existentialism, asserting that ‘the individual is solely responsible for giving his or her own life meaning and for living that life passionately and sincerely, in spite of the many existential obstacles and distractions including despair, angst, absurdity, alientation, and boredom.

…and only 3 credits per ride (1 credit = $1 dollar)

The Kierkegaard went live in May 2008 despite assertions from the General Mills Company that the cartoon bee was “a direct knock-off” of their Honey Nut Cheerios brand mascot. Representatives from Luna Park could not be reached for comment.
