the value of design

at Maine College of Art through Nov. 26

What makes a design good? What is the thinking behind good design? Can good design help advance the goals of business? Come find out at the AIGA Maine Annual Exhibit now on display at Maine College of Art.

AIGA Maine + MaineBiz present ‘Good Design is Good Business‘, curated by Mark Smith, Exhibition Director, AIGA Maine and partner at curvwork in Portland, Maine.

The exhibit explores design, beyond and beneath the finished ‘artifact’ seen by the public. It gets under the hood of real-world business challenges, showcasing BEFORE and AFTER projects and projects that explore innovative process and problem solving.

Come see the design thinking behind the design and see for yourself how Good Design is Good Business, now on display at Maine College of Art, through November 26, 2010.

…and some (perhaps most) of it is the same old blaaaaaaaaaaah that’s got nothing to do with you or me but rather maintains the status quo partisan politics at the tax payers expense. Just the same, it’s all we’ve got right now – and who knows? There may be some useful bits or chunks or SEEDS in there worthy of your vote. Listen. Read. Sift. Vote (even if you have to hold your nose)!

Please VOTE this Tuesday. And maybe take a risk to base it not on fear, not on polarized party affiliation, but on the issues and ideas that matter most. It may still be ‘the economy, stupid‘ but also consider that it may be ‘the relationship, genius!’ – our relationship to one another and ourselves.

Perhaps if we asked more questions about our own true values and what shaped them (particularly some of those more painful value-shaping moments) and stopped listening to 24 hour fear-mongering news channels (as posited at yesterday’s rally to restore sanity) we might get in touch with something new.

I mean in the end, why DO we do what we do? Do we even know or are we just on auto-pilot most of the time cause we’re too friggin’ busy to stop and ask some important questions? And if so, why is that?

“If you will accept the conditions as what you’re aiming at then the rest of this applies to you — otherwise not.”

new safe compact florescent disposal system from your R&D friends at GnombeCo.

lightbulb eating serpent - now being tested at county fairs
© 2010 Dave Weinberg

No surprise that the government has baited us hook, line and sinker into shifting our purchasing habits to more expensive energy efficient compact florescent light bulbs. Also no surprise to later discover that compact florescents are not the light emitting holy grail being marketed to us but rather a mercury-laden form of dirty electricity.

But now, thanks to our R&D friends at GnombeCo. disposal of these compact florescents is not only safe – but fun! Our bioLabs division has genetically engineered a paleozoic era sea serpent by grafting the DNA of a salamander with the DNA of conservative radio talk show host, Rush Limbaugh (plus a half a can of PBR…).

The serpent, now being tested at roving New England area county fairs has so far, been successful. Tested in the gaming areas, unwitting customers are charged a modest $3.00 a pop to guess which color lightbulbs will be eaten and in what sequence. Noted one customer from Standish, Maine, “It digests the glass and mercury which is then, recycled into more political propaganda! I guessed right 3 times in a row and won a giant stuffed beaver! I named him Oswald Edwin Bartholomew McBeaver Jr. (who’s short name is Fred…).”

County fair officials could not be reached for comment.
