tow-away zone 2.0

Those wacky guys down in R&D… will they ever cease to amaze?? A sustainable solution to removing illegally parked cars (no tow trucks required), this solution literally sucks the vehicle right into the asphalt via a bug found in Windows Vista that results in a primitive Keith Haring-like after-graphic. What will they think of next? And most important – who knew there would actually be something useful discovered in Windows Vista?

caution: potty humor just ahead

pfffffffft.... info graphic passing gas
© 2010 Dave Weinberg

Brunswick, Maine, Wednesday, July 21. Rereuters. New solar powered instant recycling bins recently installed at various locations on the Bowdoin College campus appears to feature an info graphic engaging in flatulent behavior.

The graphic, evocative of the original ‘Pitch In’ icon from the 1970’s features the universal symbol for human being, dropping trash into the universal symbol for trash can. The figure, slightly bent at the hips to suggest a slightly untucked shirt and/or lowered pant was immediately sighted by graduate students in the biology department who made a connection between trash and the release of methane.

A rogue faction of students from the political science department assert that the ‘cartoony’ outlined update of the graphic was actually designed by Matt Groening, creator of The Simpsons, and is actually an abstract profile of the character, Homer without a nose or eyeball.

It is unlikely that the icons will be changed. Bowdoin college officials were not even attempted to be reached for comment.

Know what else is a gas?

municipal sign caught moonlighting

Apparently, human beings are not the only ones looking for jobs – or second jobs. This municipal sign – typically utilized to communicate caution with regards to advancing ‘road work’ – is seen here soliciting for advertisers during off hours. Ad rates were unavailable prior to blog posting. Graffiti artists, take note.

existentialist amusement park

a glimpse at your inner beeing
© 2010 Dave Weinberg

Brooklyn, New York. One of Luna Park’s, Coney Island’s more recent additions, (appropriately shown here thru chain link fencing) is known simply as ‘The Kierkegaard’ – which uses the metaphorical symbol of an oversized cartoon bee to represent exploration of the self (while being spun around in circles for about three and a half minutes).

According to wikipedia Søren Kierkegaard is regarded, posthumously as the father of existentialism, asserting that ‘the individual is solely responsible for giving his or her own life meaning and for living that life passionately and sincerely, in spite of the many existential obstacles and distractions including despair, angst, absurdity, alientation, and boredom.

…and only 3 credits per ride (1 credit = $1 dollar)

The Kierkegaard went live in May 2008 despite assertions from the General Mills Company that the cartoon bee was “a direct knock-off” of their Honey Nut Cheerios brand mascot. Representatives from Luna Park could not be reached for comment.

cellphoneSketchpad.com launched June 28, 2009. Thank you to all who have clicked, tapped, commented and/or contributed to this blog over the past year. Your ideas and encouragement have been generous, inspiring and most appreciated!

It’s been a fun year ‘sketching’ and pushing the low-res limits of the Motorola Razr. And while I will probably break down and upgrade to an iPhone at some point this year I continue to be impressed with what that teeny tiny less-than-one-megapixel relic has been putting out.

Hope you enjoy this next venture and chapter of cellphoneSketchpad. I look forward to future collaborations and further exploring as a community-based platform for sharing art, ideas and creativity.

Thanks again for all the support!

cheers and Happy Monday!
-Dave

ps A selection of cellphoneSketchpad cards are also available at Paper Moon on Main Street in Westbrook. New locations coming soon!
